Both Roma and Palermo will be seeking to rebound from a disappointing week as they meet at the Stadio Renzo Barbera on Sunday evening.
Roma come into this game having lost the opening leg of their round of 16 tie with Lyon. The Giallorossi thought they had done enough to secure a draw, but shipped two goals at the end to end up losing 4-2. That comes off the heels of a loss to Napoli in league play, which marked their first defeat since 2011 and the first time they have conceded at the Stadio Olimpico against the Partenopei since 2013.
That ended Roma’s 15 match home winning streak, which had helped the Lupi to set a club record. Luciano Spalletti’s men also have a lot of work to do in the Coppa Italia after losing the first leg 2-0 against cross-town rivals Lazio.
In short, it’s been a trying time for Roma and their fans, and the Giallorossi will be desperate to turn things around as they prepare to take on Les Gones in the second leg next week.
Meanwhile, Palermo continue to flounder in the bottom three, as the Rosanero are a whopping seven points away from safety. Diego Lopez’s side thought they had gotten a reprieve against Torino after scoring first, but a hat-trick from the brilliantly in-form Andrea Belotti ended any hopes of a draw, let alone a win.
Strangely enough, Palermo are a sidewho have actually fared better in their travels than on home turf – but only just slightly. It took them until matchday 23 to finally win a home game, and that was against debutants (and fellow relegation candidates) Crotone. They have lost ten so far at their home base, scoring just seven and conceding 23.
As such, it goes without saying that they will be expected to ship a few more on Sunday as they have managed just two clean sheets so far in Serie A this term (against Crotone and against Atalanta).

Palermo vs Roma: Prediction
Roma’s confidence has taken a huge hit. Three straight losses have seen things go awry for the Giallorossi. The defeat in Serie A means that they’ve lost their grip on second, with Napoli just two points behind. The loss in the Coppa Italia means that they face an uphill battle to knock their cross-town rivals Lazio out of the competition. And their capitulation against Lyon means that they cannot afford to concede at the Stadio Olimpico if they want to have a strong chance of knocking Les Gones out.
Palermo, meanwhile, are also in flummox. Losing to Torino has severely damaged their chances of avoiding the drop, as they could have closed the gap on Empoli. In any case, a very frustrated Roma could end up using the Rosanero, who have won just one home game, as their punching bag as they hope to gear up for a crunch European clash next week.
