Atalanta had a very impressive campaign last season, and arguably punched well above their weight as they managed to pip teams like AC Milan and Inter to an automatic Europa League football spot. Gian Piero Gasperini’s young squad has garnered the attention of other bigger teams around Europe and as a result there have been some departures, namely Andrea Conti and Franck Kessie to AC Milan.

Another major concern is how they can deal with the demands of competing on three fronts as they are now going to be featuring in European competition. Serie A followers are certainly well aware of what happened to Sassuolo last term, who managed to earn a Europa League spot and failed miserably as their squad were stretched to the limit.

Atalanta will face a stern test against Roma, who finished second behind Juventus. The Giallorossi have a new man on the tactician’s bench, with former midfielder Eusebio Di Francesco taking over after Luciano Spalletti’s departure for Inter. Di Francesco, of course, is well known to calcio followers thanks to his overall impressive work with Sassuolo after helping the Neroverdi into the top flight.

The Lupi will be hungry to get up and running as they aim to mount a serious Serie A challenge. Last season’s top goalscorer, Edin Dzeko will obviously aim to open his account as early as possible and Roma were pretty strong on the road. They won nine out of their last ten in their travels which is quite a formidable record in their favor ahead of this season opener.

Atalanta have some changes in midfield and defense and that is something that Roma could definitely exploit. Edin Dzeko had a great campaign last season and will be expected to be in top form yet again. That being said, Roma will still be adjusting to Di Francesco’s style, whilst Atalanta are already set in Gasperini’s ways and may be able to nick a goal, as Roma are also getting some new players (i.e. Kolarov) settled in to the squad as well.
