After losing the Supercoppa Italiana, Juventus will be eager to get back to winning ways as they welcome Cagliari as they begin their Scudetto title defense at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday evening.
Massimiliano Allegri’s men were the heavy favorites against Lazio, having won the 2015 edition against the Biancocelesti in Shanghai. They were determined to get back on track after losing the 2016 version to AC Milan, but were made to pay dearly for their sluggishness as Simone Inzaghi’s men took a 2-0 lead. Despite Paulo Dybala netting a well-deserved brace to cancel out Ciro Immobile’s double, it was not enough to prevent Lazio from clinching the first piece of silverware, and it will be very interesting to see how La Vecchia Signora responds to this slight setback as they take to the pitch for this match.
As for Cagliari, Massimo Rastelli’s men finished last season in 11th. Considering that the Rossoblu were back in the top flight after being relegated at the end of the 2014/2015 season that was a pretty impressive outcome. They were largely spearheaded by the efforts of veteran striker Marco Borriello, who netted 16 goals in Serie A and 20 across all competitions, but arguably their Achilles’ heel was none other than their horribly leaky defense, which saw them concede 76 goals.
To put that in perspective, only Palermo (77) and Pescara (81) did worse, and they were relegated. Certainly, that issue could certainly cost Cagliari dearly, especially considering that Juventus will be smarting after shipping three against Lazio, but the departure of Leonardo Bonucci has left a huge hole in La Vecchia Signora’s defense.
Juventus vs Cagliari: Head-to-head statistics

Cagliari have lost their last 3 away matches
The Rossoblu have conceded at least 2 goals in their last 3 away matches
Juventus vs Cagliari: Prediction
This could be a very interesting game. For starters, Juventus have seen both Bonucci and Dani Alves, two important facets of their defense depart, whilst they have brought in several new faces. Douglas Costa and Mattia De Sciglio are amongst those likely to be in the starting XI for Allegri, and Juventus have a very strong record at their home ground. There’s no reason for them not to pick up all three points, but given that they are still coming to grips with their changed back-line, Cagliari may be able to grab a goal here.
